The author of The Willpower Instinct delivers a controversial and groundbreaking new book that overturns long-held beliefs about stress.

More than forty-four percent of Americans admit to losing sleep over stress. And while most of us do everything we can to reduce it, Stanford psychologist and bestselling author Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D., delivers a startling message Stress isn’t bad. In The Upside of Stress, McGonigal highlights new research indicating that stress can, in fact, make us stronger, smarter, and happier—if we learn how to embrace it.

The Upside of Stress is the first book to bring together cutting-edge discoveries on the correlation between resilience—the human capacity for stress-related growth—and mind-set, the power of beliefs to shape reality. As she did in The Willpower Instinct, McGonigal combines science, stories, and exercises into an engaging and practical book that is both entertaining and life-changing, showing you

   •  how to cultivate a mind-set to embrace stress
   •  how stress can provide focus and energy
   •  how stress can help people connect and strengthen close relationships
   •  why your brain is built to learn from stress, and how to increase its ability to learn from challenging experiences

McGonigal’s TED talk on the subject has already received more than 7 million views. Her message resonates with people who know they can’t eliminate the stress in their lives and want to learn to take advantage of it. The Upside of Stress is not a guide to getting rid of stress, but a guide to getting better at stress, by understanding it, embracing it, and using it.

"Do yourself a favor and read this book - Then share it with the people you care about.

This is a valuable aid to positive living that will help you discover meaning in stress and how to shift your personal reactions to gain positive life experience, as well as increased peace and health, instead of falling victim to the "stress kills" phenom.

The book provides a fuller understanding of stress that reflects new research and includes many personal stories that tie concepts into real life scenarios. I found the Introduction and beginning to be a little off-putting, but am extremely glad that I stuck with the reading. Perhaps halfway into chapter 1, I realized the gold-mine of value this book would yield. Long-assumed truisms about stress are shown to be qualified: "Stress is harmful, except when it's not. [. . .] Stress increases the risk of health problems, except when people regularly give back to their communities. Stress increases the risk of dying except when people have a sense of purpose. Stress increases the risk of depression, except when people see a benefit in their struggles. Stress is paralyzing, except when people perceive themselves as capable. Stress is debilitating, except when it helps you perform. Stress makes people selfish, except when it makes them altruistic. For every harmful outcome you can think of, there's an exception that erases the expected association between stress and something bad - and often replaces it with an unexpected benefit." (Final Reflections)

McGonigal does an excellent job in a very readable fashion of explaining each of these concluding claims in both biological and psychological processes. She also gives you the means to achieve a positive change in your own response so that you can build a much better life despite stress and trauma. It is not based on an idealized glossing of traumatic experiences, but rather a balanced look at positive benefit that can be found alongside the pain we feel."

The Upside of Stress Why Stress Is Good for You and How to Get Good at It edition by Kelly McGonigal Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

  • "The Upside of Stress" has changed my life. I was introduced to Kelly McGonigal by her TED Talk "How to make stress your friend," and after spending the last year overwhelmed by generalized anxiety disorder and almost unable to function like I need to, I decided it was finally time to get this book. It begins with a compelling overview of the contents of the book and then dives deeply into the specific ways in which embracing stress as a positive part of our lives can change how we physiologically respond to stress.

The best part is this is no gimmick McGonigal grounds all of her claims in extensive research, using statistics and anecdotes to tell a compelling story that is at the same time informative and entertaining. I frequently found myself bookmarking pages to come back to, wanting to repeat exercises in my own life to help with issues I've faced or know I will be facing in my future. Throughout the book, she includes about a dozen or so reflection exercises to facilitate reframing our stress mindset. On my first reading, I wanted to gain a broad overview, so I rushed through these exercises and made notes to come back to them as grad school and my busy work schedule allow; regardless, understanding the science behind stress and having a toolbox of ways I can interrupt debilitating anxious thoughts has certainly proven helpful almost every day in reclaiming my life from unbearable anxiety rather than feeling defeated by anxiety, I'm becoming able to control it and direct this energy into enhancing my life. As I take time to return to the reflection exercises she provides, I am certain this impact will grow.

The only complaint I have about this book is that the sources are not cited in the text (they are, however, included in an exhaustive bibliography at the end of the book, but there is no easy way to match the text with the sources this way). Especially for a book, I appreciate being able to easily find the sources that are referenced, since as a research-minded reader, I like being able to see how recent studies are, where they were published, or any author's notes that may accompany them. I hope future editions of this book will correct this shortcoming.

Overall, if you have ever suffered from undue stress or anxiety, this book will help you tame that beast and make it work for you.
  • Is stress my enemy or friend? Sometimes we make big mistakes with our judgments about a 'friend' or 'enemy'. This book made me realize that I owe Stress an apology. I am over 60, but for the last 50 years I have repeatedly and increasingly tried to avoid Stress.

I have mistakenly believed that Stress was my biggest enemy. With each passing decade the stress in my life became greater. After reading this book I now view Stress as my friend. We understand each other now and fully appreciate that we are on the same side. Just like a true friend, Stress makes me stronger.

'if you are willing to rethink your stress response, it may help you recognize your strength and access your courage.' I found these words from Kelly to be true for me. I have had two stress occasions since I finished this book. They seemed much more straight forward and very different to deal with. So far, so good.

I am surprised by some of the negative or dismissive reviews of this book. I can only assume that these readers were unwilling to genuinely deconstruct and reconstruct their relationship with stress. I found myself reading this book at different speeds and with varying intensity but every now and again some words like the following -
'People who cope with adversity by shifting and persisting seem immune to the toxicity of a difficult or disadvantaged childhood.'
would stop me dead in my tracks and I would go over the same words, again and again and again.

My old stress tools of denial, distraction and escape have melted under the spotlight of examination that this book provided. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone who wants to change their response to stress.
  • Do yourself a favor and read this book - Then share it with the people you care about.

This is a valuable aid to positive living that will help you discover meaning in stress and how to shift your personal reactions to gain positive life experience, as well as increased peace and health, instead of falling victim to the "stress kills" phenom.

In this four-color illustrated journey that is part travelogue and part theological investigation, bestselling author and acclaimed Bible scholar John Dominic Crossan and his wife Sarah painstakingly travel throughout the ancient Eastern church, documenting through text and image a completely different model for understanding Easter’s resurrection story, one that provides promise and hope for us today.

Traveling the world, the Crossans noticed a surprising difference in how the Eastern Church considers Jesus’ resurrection—an event not described in the Bible. At Saint Barbara’s Church in Cairo, they found a painting in which the risen Jesus grasps the hands of other figures around him. Unlike the Western image of a solitary Jesus rising from an empty tomb that he viewed across Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, the Crossans saw images of the resurrection depicting a Jesus grasping the hands of figures around him, or lifting Adam and Eve to heaven from Hades or hell, or carrying the old and sick to the afterlife. They discovered that the standard image for the Resurrection in Eastern Christianity is communal and collective, something unique from the solitary depiction of the resurrection in Western Christianity.

Fifteen years in the making, Resurrecting Easter reflects on this divide in how the Western and Eastern churches depict the resurrection and its implications. The Crossans argue that the West has gutted the heart of Christianity’s understanding of the resurrection by rejecting that once-common communal iconography in favor of an individualistic vision. As they examine the ubiquitous Eastern imagery of Jesus freeing Eve from Hades while ascending to heaven, the Crossans suggest that this iconography raises profound questions about Christian morality and forgiveness.

A fundamentally different way of understand the story of Jesus’ rebirth illustrated with 130 images, Resurrecting Easter introduces an inclusive, traditional community-based ideal that offers renewed hope and possibilities for our fractured modern society.

Resurrecting Easter How the West Lost and the East Kept the Original Easter Vision edition by John Dominic Crossan Sarah Crossan Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

  • This book is truly unique in that it provides the visual evidence and the supporting textual evidence of scripture that the universal resurrection of Christ is the original and oldest understanding of Easter. Romans 14, 1 Corinthians 1512, 13, 21 & 42, "resurrection of the dead ones," is cited by the Crossans as the New Testament texts from Paul that is depicted in the Eastern Orthodox depictions of Christ raising of Adam and Eve (along with figures such as King David and King Solomon, Mary, John the Baptist and other prophets. As a pastor working in ministry, preaching and teaching, I truly appreciate a work explains the different lines in the 2nd Article of the Apostle's Creed ("descended to the dead" and "descended into hell"). Clearly, the Crossans prove that the Eastern Orthodox Tradition depicts the earliest understanding of Easter in the phrase "descended to the dead." Their work will be a great aid to both teaching and preaching, bringing together the koine Greek of the New Testament and the visual arts of the Eastern Orthodox Tradition.

Secondly, this book flows well from Crossan's earlier work in "God & Empire Jesus Against Rome, Then and Now" (2008). For in Resurrecting Easter the Crossans clearly illustrate how the influence of Constantine and the Roman Empire make the image of Christ into the violent rule of emporer, It is the Western empire that melds the image of hell and Satan into Hades (place of the dead). I recommend "God and Empire" to those who missed the importance of these details in their reviews.

As an author whose biblical orientation is that of Rene' Girard, I find the work of the Crossans "resurrectng" an understanding of Easter that is entirely in line with mimetic theory, which understands the human person beyond the Western mindset of individualism. Thank you to the Crossans for a work that will not only enrich pastoral ministry in preaching and teaching but also provide material for important academic study in shaping the understanding of the Christian faith for our time and the future.
  • This book is phenomenal. It mixes several of my passions (theology, church history, and art) into a single narrative tracing the history of the anastasis icon common in non-Western churches. I would absolutely recommend this book for anyone who is interested in church history, for those seeking to better understand the early beliefs within the faith called Christianity, or for anyone who feels discouraged about the message of their Christian faith and needs to see that there has always been hope at the center.
  • The Crossans have written a wonderful book, full of great color pictures throughout, which make it attractive as a gift. It explores the intersection of the theology around the resurrection of Christ, and how it has manifested in Christian iconography. Even more importantly, it is wonderfully researched, and accompanied by travelogue giving a bit of a sense-of-place for where these icons are found. Finally, Crossan explores the meaning behind the figures in the icons to find the importance for the people who wrote them, and a tradition for us to reclaim today whether in the East or West.
  • This book is a book that I treasure as a reference. Icons are not a part of my faith history, but I do realize that before the general population could read, icons were what they had to usher them into the Holy. The sad part is that the eastern and western theology split ( I suspect because the men in charge manipulated the outcome) and that is clearly shown in the history of icons as well as other theological ideas of the time. Some of that manipulation remains within the teachings of Christianity today. Reading this book helped me see, understand and know a it more about how Christianity was passed down.
  • This is one awesome book, accomplishing two distinct purposes. One, I was drawn into the book as something like a detective story. I found it fascinating to go from discovery to discovery. Second, I learned a lot about Christianity and will have to revise some of my thoughts and believes in light of what is presented here. I should add, It took the authors many years to come up with this book and I deeply appreciate their persistence and wisdom. Thanks!
  • The books is a bit of a travel log. It is also a book with many illustrations of early Christian art. The contrast of the resurrection as an individual event vs. a universal event is intriguing. Crossan is one of the leading authorities in the popular world for helping us understand the Bible and early Christianity. Now he (and she) needs to write a book on the Eastern Church to bring it more to the awareness of a general readership.
  • glad for the contrast from Eastern to Western thought, photos are a pleasure
  • I studied and taught Scripture in the 70’s but I am still learning from the erudition , readability and breath of D. Crossen’s genius. Where was he when I was teaching? This book, like all of his work will , is so groundbreaking and exciting. please, Dr. Crosse, keep them coming

A NEW YORK TIMES Bestseller!

The complete critically acclaimed and best-selling tale is now available in one sensational volume.

BATMAN HUSH is a thrilling mystery of action, intrigue and deception penned by Jeph Loeb (BATMAN THE LONG HALLOWEEN) and illustrated by comics superstar Jim Lee (ALL STAR BATMAN & ROBIN, THE BOY WONDER). Batman sets out to discover the identity of a mysterious mastermind using the Joker, Riddler, Ra's al Ghul and the Dark Knight's other enemies--and allies--as pawns in a plan to wreak havoc.

This volume collects BATMAN #609-619 as well as the 6-page segment from WIZARD #0 and a 2-page origin story.

PDF Batman The Complete Hush Batman 19402011 eBook Jeph Loeb Jim Lee

"Amazing is one word that could sum up this entire piece. Not only is the reader privy to excellent writing from Loeb, but a visual masterpiece from Lee. This story takes many twists and turns, from the dank, shadowy Gotham, to the brighter, more hopeful Metropolis. Batman encounters almost his entire rogues gallery through this story, while simultaneously balancing his life as Bruce Wayne and the Dark Knight. Loeb explores the human aspects of Batman, showing that even this brooding detective feels emotion. His relationship with Selina Kyle evolves to greater depth. While this is the focus, his interactions with his two protégées, Robin and Nightwing, is by no means left out of the story. The incorporation of Jim Gordon, Huntress, Lois Lane and Superman provide an interesting perspective into how other characters perceive the Dark Knight and how his methods differ when fighting crime. The writing is almost seamless, no chapter feels as though it could be discarded, and each panel has some significance to the story.

Jim Lee's Batman is tough and heroic looking, intimidating yet not outrageous (as far as dressing up as a bat can be). Each villain, with the possible exception of Joker, looks terrific. I only single out Joker, because it seems as if Lee draws him in several styles (particularly his face), and looks as if his features change. Of course, Joker still looks insane and maniacal, just a little distracting however. Hush is some of Lee's best work, no doubt helped by the excellent colors and inks. The reader can tell that effort and thought was put into the art. Some feel that this is among Jim Lee's best work, and I can certainly understand why.

In the end, there really is no good reason not to purchase this book. While perhaps not as seminal as the Dark Knight Returns, I enjoy rereading this piece much more. It is satisfying, a good conclusion with just enough hint of a cliff hanger to feel eager to read more. When many comic book readers talk about missing the older days of comics, this is one of those works that makes certain contemporary titles shrink by comparison."

CIRCE Madeline Miller Books Reviews

  • Brief summary, no spoilers.

I know it may be odd to talk about “spoilers” when this is the story of a mythological character, but there are reasons for that and I will explain in the review.

This book is told from the point of view of Circe, daughter of the sun Titan Helios. Her mother was Perse, a sea nymph who was the granddaughter of the Titan Oceanos.

We mainly know of Circe from the Odyssey and her interactions with Odysseus. She was known as a sorceress who lived on an island and turned men into pigs. We know from the Odyssey that Circe was often seen working at a huge loom surrounded by dangerous animals such as wolves and lions, yet they were all under her control. We also know from the Odyssey that Odysseus - by virtue of his wiles - not only avoids Circe’s sorcery but beds her as well. When he leaves she gives him advice on how to survive the perils on his seaward journey home to his homeland of Ithaca, such as Scylla and Charybdis, so he can reunite with his beloved wife Penelope and son Telemachus.

So why did I like this book so much? Well, stand back, because I’m about to gush.

I am a big fan of Greek mythology, and I was a big fan of this author’s previous book, The Song of Achilles. Yet this one was even better.

Circe was not a major figure in the Odyssey; in fact when I first opened the book I realized I got her mixed up with Calypso. But I won’t make that mistake anymore. This minor character has now become my favorite character of all thanks to this author’s brilliant work.

Because this book is told from Circe’s point of view, we get to intimately know her - not just her history and story but her thoughts as well. The reason this is so important is because we come to empathize with Circe. We tend to think of the Greek Gods as so fickle and often cruel - and indeed they are often depicted that way - yet with Circe, we meet a goddess who is so human and so very, very likable.

The reason I made the “no spoilers” comment at the start, is because Circe’s experiences include her meeting and interacting with various other figures from Greek myth, and it’s a big part of the enjoyment of this novel to experience it the way the author intended, without knowing what is going to happen next.

I took a few days to read this book but that was not because it was a slow read. Just the opposite; I was so happy while reading it that I would stop myself after each chapter just to pace myself so it wouldn’t end too soon.

I highly (obviously) recommend this to any fans of Greek mythology and for sure to anyone who enjoyed The Song of Achilles. But you don’t have to know much about the Odyssey or Greek mythology to love this book. Although this novel is about a god, it’s really a story about what it means to be human.
  • {My Thoughts}
    What Worked For Me

A Classic Tale Reimagined – Taking a classic story and reinventing it with a modern twist is nothing new. We see it time after time, but the usual reimagining places the characters and plot in a contemporary setting as the story plays out. With Circe, Madeline Miller kept the characters and the setting, and instead shifted the focus, placing it solely on Circe. Those of you with a background in mythology will see many, many elements from classic Greek mythology (especially The Odyssey) popping up in this book. However, if you’ve lived under a rock and never even knew there was such a thing as mythology it won’t matter. Miller gives you everything you need to know and she does it seamlessly.

A Woman with Attitude – If you’re anything like me, you will come to adore Circe, the book and the woman. Born into one of the two most powerful families of gods, Circe adored her father, Helios, but never quite measured up. Where her siblings were gorgeous and powerful from an early age, Circe was plain and seemingly powerless. Tormented by her own family, Circe grew more and more fascinated with mortals. Falling in love with one, brought out her previously unknown powers of witchcraft.

“I was too wild to feel shame. It was true. I would not just uproot the world, but tear it, burn it, do any evil I could to keep Glaucos by my side. But what stayed most in my mind was the look on my grandmother’s face when I’d said that word, pharmaka. It was not a look I know well among the gods.”

This girl had gumption and she used her new power to punish her rival, creating a monster all came to feared. But, she paid a price for going too far. Circe was banished to the small island of Aiaia for eternity. This is where the book Circe really took off for me. On the island, I found it impossible not to admire and root for this woman who year after year, century after century, faced her fears, honed her powers, and learned to stand up for herself.

“She was gone. But I said it anyway, to that great empty room and my son’s dreaming ears “You do not know what I can do.”

Soap Opera of the Gods – You might think a story of a woman alone on an island could get dull, but you would be wrong. Circe lived a lonely life, but was not without the occasional visitor, many bringing adventure and challenges to her life. Hermes flitted in and out with news and gossip from the worlds of gods and mortals. Her sister, Pasiphae, granted Circe temporary exile to help deal with her little Minotaur problem. Shipwrecked sailors soon discovered the wrath of Circe. And then came Odysseus, perhaps her most well known visitor, bringing to Circe a lasting love she was willing to die for. The level of drama never failed!

That House – I really can’t say any more, but for those who have read Circe I want that house!

    What Didn’t
Absolutely EVERYTHING worked for me in Circe!

    {The Final Assessment}
Madeline Miller is definitely a writer to admire. Reinventing the life of a minor goddess into a remarkable woman while remaining faithful to the original mythology can be no small feat. Miller did it in the best way possible, by knowing her star character and sticking to her story. From start to finish Circe was all about Circe, no long tangents, no veering off into some other god’s story. Just Circe her life, her feelings, her mistakes, her heart, her choices. I haven’t yet read Millers’s debut, Song of Achilles, but I will. I’m already looking forward to that next trip to ancient Greece. If it’s anything like Circe, I’m sure to find the journey immersive, entertaining, exciting, everything! Just incase I haven’t been clear, I loved Circe. She will be one of my top ten books this year. Grade A
  • This book caught me by surprise. I was swept up in the tale of Circe, a goddess, and amazed by the simple truths of human life revealed. Madeline Miller captured both the beauty and bitter futility of being human, and I will be philosophically turning these thoughts over in my head for years to come. Timeless masterpiece that will only become sweeter with each read.
  • I’ve been waiting for Circe since I closed the endpapers of The Song of Achilles. Miller has the expert’s eye and a storyteller’s touch - a female storyteller at that, which makes her remarkable among the other writers and rewriters of the classic Greek tales.

Here, her gifts are used in telling the story of Circe, child of Helios and one of the lesser gods, the first witch of the world. She spins a tale of bravery, gullibility, fear and courage; she tells the tale of a goddess who has the heart of a mortal. I don’t want to give anything away and thus ruin Miller’s spellbinding tales, but it’s not a spoiler to say that I was astounded by the ways in which Miller was able to imbue her heroine with the same human frailties and fears as those of us mere mortals the love of a mother, the burning shame of disgrace, the slow and fast at once finding of ones identity and center, the ways in which we all reach for more than perhaps we know, the giddy ness of losing ones fear and with it, the donning of grace and gratitude.

Circe’s tales are big, and they’re writ large here. And yet they feel so real and common even as they burn with a strange fire.

Miller deserves to be mentioned among the greats. I look forward to her next creation with excitement and of course more than a little adoration.
Give yourself the beautiful opportunity to see Circe as she has never been seen. Read this book right away!!

Rose senza profumo e senza spine. Rose bugiarde, proprio come lui.
