LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY KIRKUS REVIEWS • In this moving, lyrical, and ultimately uplifting collection of essays, Michael Paterniti turns a keen eye on the full range of human experience, introducing us to an unforgettable cast of everyday people.
Michael Paterniti is one of the most original and empathic storytellers working today. His writing has been described as “humane, devastating, and beautiful” by Elizabeth Gilbert, “spellbinding” by Anthony Doerr, and “expansive and joyful” by George Saunders. In the seventeen wide-ranging essays collected for the first time in Love and Other Ways of Dying, he brings his full literary powers to bear, pondering happiness and grief, memory and the redemptive power of human connection.
In the remote Ukranian countryside, Paterniti picks apples (and faces mortality) with a real-life giant; in Nanjing, China, he confronts a distraught jumper on a suicide bridge; in Dodge City, Kansas, he takes up residence at a roadside hotel and sees, firsthand, the ways in which the racial divide turns neighbor against neighbor. In each instance, Paterniti illuminates the full spectrum of human experience, introducing us to unforgettable everyday people and bygone legends, exploring the big ideas and emotions that move us. Paterniti reenacts François Mitterrand’s last meal in a rustic dining room in France and drives across America with Albert Einstein’s brain in the trunk of his rental car, floating in a Tupperware container. He delves with heartbreaking detail into the aftermath of a plane crash off the coast of Nova Scotia, an earthquake in Haiti, and a tsunami in Japan—and, in searing swirls of language, unearths the complicated, hidden truths these moments of extremity teach us about our ability to endure, and to love.
Michael Paterniti has spent the past two decades grappling with some of our most powerful subjects and incomprehensible events, taking an unflinching point of view that seeks to edify as it resists easy answers. At every turn, his work attempts to make sense of both love and loss, and leaves us with a profound sense of what it means to be human. As he writes in the Introduction to this book, “The more we examine the grooves and scars of this life, the more free and complete we become.”

"Very well narrated! I like the style the essays are written; they are not based on other works of literature (as most essays are). Paterniti observes every detail around him and finds a way to bring life to those experiences with his extremely lengthy descriptions. I must admit, sometimes the sentences seem a bit "too wordy", it's almost as though the author found numerous ways to illustrate one setting and was unsure which one to use so he writes them all down! HOWEVER, the avid attention to detail, thought process and lengthy descriptions, makes the reader feel like they are being told a story by a friend or a character in a movie! This may simply be an entry to Paterniti's mind but one can easily take any of his pieces and make them into a movie!

THE SELLER SENT THIS BOOK IN EXCELLENT CONDITION; IN A TIMELY MANNER! I will purchase from this seller again! - This is a great collection of stories. While they all might have a common theme, that theme did not grow tedious from one story to the next. One of the best things about these stories is how Paterniti breaks from the often boring journalistic style of a lot of non-fiction stories. He clearly has an eye for finding a story where many would walk right by without so much as a curious glance.
- I chose this book because it mentioned "dying" in the title, and this is one of my favorite subjects. This is not a book about dying, but rather a collection of essays about different slices of life, now and in the past, in diverse cultures and areas of the globe. I believe it was labeled "creative journalism, and I had trouble at some points discerning whether I was reading fact or fiction. Each piece was masterfully written, and the reader was completely immersed in the world Paterniti had created.
- Michael Paterniti's writing style was so on-spot clever, poetic and sensual. What I mean by sensual, was I could clearly and profoundly taste, see and feel a lot of the plot, details and emotions found in Paterniti's stories. Some of the lines were just so unique, definitely apart from the common cliche' and choppy writing found in other's books. Because I don't always have hours to devote to reading, I like story compilations, but this book was really hard to put down once you got started!
- You need to buy this book right now. Paterniti is one of the best magazine writers of our generation. People will be reading these stories 30 years from now and we - we lucky few - we get to read them today when they are fresh and unencumbered by the heaviness of history. We can read them because they are beautiful and true and they sit in your chest and make you feel more real. You will not find a better return on your investment anywhere else on . Spend the money and carry away the riches. Do it now.
- What can I say? Thank God Michael Paterniti exists and that he wrote this book.
Particularly, if you want a read that's
* bit-sized
* thoughtful/profound
* well-written …
I highly recommend Love and Other Ways of Dying. - A lot of these stories are tragic, but they do evoke a lot of emotions and stay with you
- Very interesting vibrant stories. The author has written about people and events you would never consider. Absolutely fascinating.
