When Mazal and Ezra ben-Yichya embarked in 1882 on their long journey from Sana'a to the Holy Land, their young hearts were filled with dreams of the glory they were sure awaited them in Jerusalem. But those dreams were quickly dispelled by the reality they encountered dark, towering walls of stone and a community of pious but impoverished Jews with customs foreign to them. How would the ben-Yichyas find their place in this new world peopled by European Torah scholars, and who would buy the exquisite jewelry they fashioned? This stirring saga spans four generations of a family of Yemenite goldsmiths at the vortex of history in the Land of Israel. Their tragedies and triumphs, their sorrows and joys, and most of all, the heroine's profound love for the Holy City, create a vivid and lasting image of an ancient land rising from two millennia of slumber to an era of splendor.

The Pomegranate Pendant Dvora Waysman Books Reviews
- The characters are well developed and just simply reading this felt like I was watching a movie. It really reminds me of a World War I & II movie based in Europe or America. For every chapter a sum of years pass more or less. Each chacter has a true sense of personhood that you could cry for or celebrate with. The book has it'a fair share of ups and downs. The book ended perfectly as a good movie would but it just leaves you wanting to read more which is why a second book to supplement this one was written. I have not read the second book yet but i find myself having to reread the first book to build of the necessary context and excitement for the second book in order to have a natural transition from A to B.
- This book gives the reader a good knowledge of the history and culture of the Jews who lived in Yemen at the turn of the century and their pilgrimages to the land of Israel. It traces four generations of a family of goldsmiths. I got caught up in reading about their lives.
Dvora Waysman describes Israel and particulary Jerusalem with knowledge and love of the land. - Interesting, historical novel about Jerusalem and the different communities living there at the time. The emphasis is on the history rather than the storyline. Strong main character.
- Dvora Waysman weaves a beautiful story of the struggles which faced the Jews of Yemen when they came to Palestine. Those struggles continued with the building of the modern State of Israel. This is a must read for anyone who is interested in a background of the region.
